Body of Christ, growing in maturity, serving in ministries,
are living vessels witnessing the Holy Spirit’s miraculous
power to redeem every soul and circumstance.

     OUR MISSION
The mission of Asbury is to make disciples of Jesus Christ.

ACTION PLAN

Clergy and Laity will:
  • Study Scriptures, pray, and share testimonies and witness Christ’s love throughout communities
  • Give our time, tithes, and talents, faithfully and consistently
  • Hold leaders  and congregational members accountable
  • Implement, monitor, and adjust the Action Plan as Stewards of God’s Vision.

STEWARDSHIP STATEMENT

Our stewardship is in response to God’s goodness, blessings and grace shown toward us.  Therefore, we strive to give of our time, talents, and resources faithfully and consistently as an act of worship in spirit and in truth which enables us to feel a divine connection to God.

OUR HISTORY
The roots of Asbury United Methodist Church extend from the beginning of Methodism in Savannah when John Wesley arrived and developed missions and chapels to the present.  Following the Civil War, there were changes in organization.  In 1870 one group of Black Methodists purchased Andrew Chapel on Gwinnett Street near West Broad and named it for Francis Asbury.  On July 24, 1871, the Savannah Morning News reported the formal transfer of the church to the "colored" congregation of the Methodist Church of America.

Community service and missionary work have been an important part of our program since its inception.  In the early years, Asbury sponsored Haven Home for Girls.  In more recent years, the church has been instrumental in the establishment of the Bethelem Center, which is now the Wesley Community Center.  The first Troop of Boy Scouts was organized by S. L. White in the basement of the church.  Individuals and organizations of the church continue to render helpful services.

Throughout, our 135 years of service, many ministers have shepherded this flock.  Each accomplished his own milestone and led the church closer to all that Christ would have it to be.  We are thankful for God’s watchful eyes and guiding hands. The Asbury Family is very proud of our church and its history.  Let us pray God’s blessing upon her future development and contributions toward Kingdom Building.
